Zlín - The modernization of the Augustinian House in Luhačovice in the Zlín region received the main award this year in the Construction of the Year competition for the Zlín Region 2009 in the category of Public Utility Buildings. The prize from the Governor of the Zlín Region was awarded to the transfer terminal for public transport in Otrokovice in the Zlín region. Petr Mikulec, chairman of the regional company of the Union of Construction Entrepreneurs, said this today to ČTK.

The expert jury assessed a record 55 registered buildings this year, compared to 44 last year. "The eighth edition is exceptional also for the non-traditional buildings registered," noted Mišurec. This year, the expert jury evaluated, for example, two museum exhibitions, a music pavilion in Rožnov pod Radhoštěm, the Marian Chapel in Traplice, the modernized Kohútka ski area, and wooden bridges over the Baťa Canal.
The buildings were divided into seven categories. The most numerous was the category of civic buildings, with 19 entries. The category of development projects for towns and municipalities is becoming increasingly popular, with the jury assessing 15 this year.
The main award in the category of Residential Buildings was won by the apartment building Zlín - Křiby, while the category of Family Houses was dominated by the residence Zlín - Příluky. The main award among industrial and agricultural buildings was won by the assembly and warehouse hall RIM - CZ Otrokovice. The modernization of the Kohútka ski area won in the category of Transport, Engineering, and Ecological Buildings. The city of Napajedla, with its public space improvements, dominated the category of Implementation of Development Projects for Towns and Municipalities. The journalists' award went to the project for improving leisure activities in Chvalčov. Among the buildings realized outside the Zlín Region, experts most highly appreciated the production areas of Kingspan in Hradec Králové. The Grand Prix title by architect Pavel Novák was not awarded this year.
A part of the competition is also a contest for the most valuable student work, in which 13 high school students from construction fields in Zlín and Uherské Hradiště participated this year. The highest award went to Marek Valenta from the Secondary Industrial School of Zlín.
The competition also includes awards for students from secondary vocational schools who represented the region excellently in national and international competitions. Tomáš Jiříček and Jiří Kabeláč from the Secondary Industrial School of Construction in Valašské Meziříčí received recognition for second place in the national competition for painting students, CzechSkills, and for advancement to the international competition EuroSkills. The organizer of the competition is the Czech Association of Painters and Varnishers.
