The Building of the Year 2016 in the Karlovy Vary Region is the restoration of the monastery in Teplá

Karlovy Vary - The Building of the Year in the Karlovy Vary Region is this year the restoration of the Premonstratensian Monastery in Teplá. This was decided by a professional jury today. Among the projects, experts recognized the design of the footbridge over Karlovy Vary’s Upper Station. In the public voting, the unique educational center Center for Health and Safety in Karlovy Vary won, as informed by Anna Vlášková, the secretary of the Regional Construction Association.

The restoration of the monastery in Teplá, designed by the AED project studio, was one of the largest construction projects in the field of monuments in the region in recent years. It cost nearly half a billion crowns. It included the restoration of the building itself and the unique tunnel sewage and drainage system of the monastery.

Experts awarded second place among buildings to the Centralization of Medical Care in the hospital in Karlovy Vary and third place to the construction of the section of road R6 between Lubenec and Bošov. Among the projects, besides the footbridge over the Upper Station, they also recognized the completion of the revitalization of the hospital complex in Cheb, which the region is expected to start this year.

A special award from Governor Martin Havel (ČSSD) was given for the completion of the first phase of the social facility in Dalovice, and from Karlovy Vary Mayor Petr Kulhánek (KOA) for the major renovation of the Church of Peter and Paul in Karlovy Vary.

The public supported the construction of the Center for Health and Safety in Karlovy Vary in an online vote. The center's complex resembles a small town in its appearance and surroundings. At the center of the complex is a large modern traffic playground with intersections, a fully functional railway crossing, traffic lights, sidewalks, and so forth. Along the paths are thematic houses, such as an emergency service station, a family home, or a small hospital with an ambulance. The interiors of the individual houses were created by film architects.

Among the projects, the design of the modernist pilgrimage chapel Maria Sorg in Jáchymov by the MONarch studio won the public vote. The concrete building was designed by architect Marcela Plachá.

The public also voted for the best restored monument. Among them, narrowly, by a difference of 18 votes, the restoration of the castle in Štědrá from the late 18th century won. It was on the brink of collapse, but today it is gradually regaining its former appearance. The municipality bought the castle in 2011 and is trying to save it.

Last year, the main awards went to the reconstruction of the castle in Ostrov, the restoration of the Grandhotel Ambassador - National House in Karlovy Vary, and the Cibulka lookout tower near Oloví.
