Brno - The construction of the tram line in Brno from Bystrce to the Kamechy housing estate for 1.84 billion crowns has received a construction permit. This was announced by Brno on its official Facebook profile. The Transport Company of the City of Brno confirmed this information in response to a query from ČTK.
"The first groundwork will begin next week, but there will be no restrictions for passengers yet. Details will be provided in the coming days," said the general director of the transport company, Miloš Havránek. The contractor already started preparatory work and archaeological surveys earlier this January.
The new line, which will significantly improve access to the ever-expanding Kamechy housing estate on the outskirts of Brno, will measure 1.4 kilometers, and will include a 320-meter-long tunnel. In a short time, this will be the third tram tunnel in Brno. One runs under Wilson's Forest along Žabovřeská Street, and the second serves trams going to Bohunice Hospital.
The line will run along Vejrostova Street, passing under Říčanská Street through a tunnel, and a new loop will be created between Kamechy, Hostislavova, and Kocanovská streets. On the other side of Kamechy Street, there will be a new bus turnaround. There will also be stops Ruda and Říčanská, with the latter mostly located in the tunnel. The loop will be three-track, and new stops will also be created in the Ečerova loop. Trams will travel in the opposite direction than today, so that there will be only one boarding stop towards the city center for trams coming from Kamechy.
The construction of the track has been in preparation for ten years and has been complicated by relatively challenging geological conditions, ultimately leading the city to choose from three possible options. The Kamechy housing estate has been developing for 20 years and today is home to thousands of people who must transfer from buses when traveling to the city.
The transport company expects that after the completion of the line, the supplementary bus line 54, which provides a connection between Kamechy and both upper and lower Bystrc, will be discontinued.
