Prague - Prague Services (PSAS) will modify the buildings, equipment, and surroundings of the Malešice incinerator. Ondřej Kohout from the CCEA MOBA studio for PSAS said this to the ČTK, with which the company signed a contract today to organize an international architectural competition. The estimated value of the contract is 300 million crowns. The competition will be announced in November and the winner is expected to be known in March 2019. PSAS is a joint-stock company that is predominantly owned by the capital city and is responsible for waste collection and disposal in Prague.
The aim of the architectural competition is to cultivate the area around the incinerator, including its immediate surroundings. The decision to organize the competition was reportedly influenced by the design of the Vienna incinerator by the renowned architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser. There is also an effort to bring the functioning of the incinerator closer to the public. "From the past, we know that purely technical buildings can also be architectural gems. We are returning to this tradition now," said Deputy Mayor Petra Kolínská (SZ/Trojkoalice).
The international competition will be anonymous, and an international jury will decide on the resulting proposals. A catalog will be created from the submitted proposals and an exhibition of the received designs will also be organized.
PSAS, based on a ten-year contract from the magistrate from 2015, ensures the collection and processing of waste for about two-thirds of the metropolis. The rest is handled by AVE CZ, a company owned by entrepreneur Daniel Křetínský and its subcontractors. PSAS's net profit last year was 123.3 million crowns.
Prague has already agreed with AVE CZ to buy its stake and subsequently obtained permission from the Czech National Bank (ČNB) for the so-called squeeze-out of the remaining few percent of shares in Prague Services (PSAS) this September. Squeeze-out allows an owner with more than 90 percent of the shares to force minority shareholders to sell their stakes. Thus, the city will fully control the company in the coming months.
