On July 16, 2008, the Council of the 8th municipal district confirmed the selection of the jury for the most suitable proposal submitted in the competition for the memorial to Operation Anthropoid. The winning proposal was submitted by David Moješčík, Michal Šmeral, Miroslava Tůmová, and Jiří Gulbis. The 8th municipal district concluded the competition for the most suitable proposal for the memorial to Operation Anthropoid. The winning design was created by authors David Moješčík, Michal Šmeral, Miroslava Tůmová, and Jiří Gulbis. On Wednesday, July 16, 2008, the Prague 8 municipal council made its decision in accordance with the competition jury. "It is only now, that is after all legal deadlines have passed and especially after the decision of the client, the Council of the Municipal District of Prague 8, that it is possible to officially announce the result of the competition," states the Deputy Mayor Vladimíra Ludková, adding: "The memorial will be ceremonially unveiled next year in May, on the anniversary of the assassination attempt by Gabčík and Kubiš on Reinhard Heydrich." The subject of the competition was to develop a design for the memorial to Operation Anthropoid at the site of the assassination, including construction modifications of the immediate surroundings of the memorial. The financial limit for the implementation of the memorial was five million crowns, which will be guaranteed by the Municipal District of Prague 8. According to the competition conditions, the future memorial is to be not only a reminder of one of the most successful actions of the Czechoslovak resistance during World War II but also a symbolic tribute to military virtues expressed in the Czechoslovak military tradition, such as loyalty to the oath, bravery, and the will to defend one’s country even at the cost of one’s own life. In agreement with the authors and within the competition rules, the final form of the memorial will still be modified. This may concern, for example, the height of the proposed ten-meter pedestal made of steel construction and covered with steel sheet. "Its height will be professionally evaluated for traffic safety reasons, as the memorial will be located at a busy communication site," the deputy mayor states. The basic idea, the symbol in the form of a triangular shape of the wedge of the Czech, or rather Czechoslovak flag, will be retained by the pedestal. The figures standing on its edge in an almost suicidal stance, corresponding to the act performed, were originally meant to represent the paratroopers. "In agreement with the authors, the figures will depict an Englishand a Czechoslovak soldier as well as a civilian, as the success of the operation also depended on the civilians," the deputy mayor adds. The figures stand on a rusty pedestal - a national symbol that they are trying to defend. Their faces have no details to highlight the tendency to forget the heroes. The operation Anthropoid (man) is then recalled by the posture of the figures, which is derived from Leonardo da Vinci's famous drawing of a man. Compared to the original proposal, the change will also concern the design of the uniforms that the figures are wearing. The final form will be chosen following the recommendation of the Military Historical Institute. The council of the eighth municipal district also decided on the placement of the competition proposals in 2nd and 3rd place. The second place and a cash award of 100,000 crowns was awarded to the proposal by academic sculptor František Häckel, while the third place and a cash prize of 50,000 crowns was awarded to the proposal by academic sculptor Michal Gabriel and Causa, Ltd. The completely anonymous proposals were evaluated by the competition jury, which was appointed by the Council of the Municipal District of Prague 8 on May 21, 2008. The evaluation meeting was attended by the jury members plk. Mgr. Aleš Knížek, PhDr. Stanislav Kokoška, doc. Dr. Josef Hendrich, plk. Alexander Beer, Jaroslav Čvančara, ThDr. Jaroslav Šuvarský, PhDr. Ivo Železný, Mgr. Vladimíra Ludková, PhDr. Michal Lukeš, PhD and Mgr. Marek Pokorný.
