Prague - A small square near the Quadrio complex above the Národní třída metro station is adorned with an eleven-meter statue of Franz Kafka by David Černý. It is divided into 42 layers that rotate independently thanks to a motor drive. The statue, which is also a piece of engineering, weighs a total of 39 tons. The investor paid 30 million crowns for it. The glass sculptures by Maxim Velčovský in the foyer of the office part of the project cost an additional four million crowns. "From the very beginning, it was considered that there would be some piece of art in this piazza. We approached several artists and eventually chose David Černý, who presented us with three different designs. From those, we selected this idea," said Igor Klajmon of CPI Property Group. "Only time and users will show whether it will be liked," he added.
Maxim Velčovský's glass sculpture Good Spirits is located in the entrance hall of the office part. It is to remind that houses called U černého koně, U bílého lva, and U bílé boty used to stand in this place. "The individual glass sculptures were first made from a wire structure and then adorned with black or opal balls made of hand-blown industrial glass," described the sculpture Václav Koukolíček from Lasvit, which was involved in the production. For example, over six thousand black balls in six sizes with diameters ranging from 14 to 100 millimeters were used for the black horse, which measures more than three meters in length. In the center of the complex, there is another decorative element - a pulsating heart. "At the suggestion of Jiří Máca and Ondřej Karpián, we transformed the symbol of our Quadrio house into a heart," Klajmon noted. Lasvit also contributed to the reception desk in the commercial part of the project. A system designed by designers Peter Olah and Lars Kemper was used. It consists of seven glass panels made of flat glass decorated with hand grinding. The panels are illuminated around the perimeter with LED strips that can be programmed to change colors. The building was designed by the studio Cigler Marani Architects. The sole investor in the Quadrio project is CPI Property Group of billionaire Radovan Vítek. Construction began on July 10, 2012, and finished this year on October 1. The total costs amounted to 3.1 billion crowns.
