Ostrava - The Ostrava Puppet Theatre will receive 70 million crowns from European funds for the construction of a new alternative stage, which was initiated this June. The EU grant will cover most of the costs totaling 78 million crowns. The project was supported by the Regional Council of Moravia-Silesia, which redistributes European funds, said its spokesman Michal Sobek to ČTK.
A new alternative stage for 60 spectators will be added to the theatre. Another 100 seats will be added in the outdoor amphitheater. "The existing theatre building will also undergo internal reconstruction and modernization. The investment will help increase the theatre's capacity, expand its program offerings, and attract more spectators. The theatre has long faced demand that cannot be met," Sobek reminded.
The extension of the alternative stage, which is expected to be completed next year, is one of the buildings that will be created as part of the Black Meadow Cluster. It is a key investment project for Ostrava's candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture 2015. It includes a comprehensive transformation of Ostrava's Black Meadow, where a model urban district is to be newly built.
"If we succeed in developing Black Meadow according to the winning design of the international conceptual competition won by the company Maxwan, a concert hall, Kunsthalle, and a theatre will stand in one location. The extension thus fits into the entire concept,” said the mayor's deputy Zdeněk Trejbal (ČSSD).
The Ostrava Puppet Theatre was located at Masaryk Square until 1999, when the Ostrava puppeteers moved to a new theatre building on the edge of the Black Meadow exhibition grounds. During the season, the theatre performs around 480 shows and stages four to five new productions. In the new stage, it plans, for example, chamber productions, interactive performances for children, workshops for children with disabilities, literary-dramatic activities, and programs for seniors.
