The city of Kladno is almost entirely surrounded by suburban forests, which are within walking distance for most residents from their homes. The ring of suburban forests prevented significant extensive development of the city in the 1990s, thereby protecting the city from the adverse effects of encroaching upon the surrounding landscape. This led to an outflow of some residents to surrounding municipalities, where massive construction of family homes on green fields was taking place and continues to this day, but from today's urban perspective, it provides Kladno with an opportunity to maintain compact dimensions, to develop qualitatively from within, and to utilize the proximity of the surrounding landscape as a place for recreation.
