Prague – The Prague Public Transit Company has announced a tender for a metro architect. At a press conference regarding the winning designs for metro station D, the company's director Petr Witowski announced this today. The architect should focus on caring for artistically valuable works in the metro stations from the 70s and 80s. In the case of new constructions, they should ensure the architectural quality. They are expected to start in September or possibly October, said the mayor's assistant Adam Scheinherr (Praha Sobě).
According to Scheinherr, the position of metro architect will be created for the first time in the history of the Prague Public Transit Company. The works created in the metro in the 70s and 80s are largely damaged, some even covered up. One of the architect's tasks will be their cataloging, Scheinherr stated. "They should be concerned about visual pollution, and they should oversee a unified information and navigation system,” he said. In renovations, they should guarantee that attention will not only be paid to the technical aspect, but the artistic side will also be taken into account.
According to information about the position on the transit company's website, they will also be a member of the jury for architectural and artistic competitions, and will ensure educational and publishing activities. The Public Transit Company offers benefits totaling 60,000 crowns per year.
The city transport company was established in 1897 under the name Electric Enterprises of the Royal Capital City of Prague. It was transformed into a joint-stock company, with the city as the sole shareholder, in 1991. It employs around 11,000 people.
