Prague - The Prague City Hall will not issue a tender for the renovation of the Old Town Hall and the reconstruction of the adjacent historical house U Minuty. The councilors did not approve the project today. In the heritage-listed house, an exhibition space was supposed to be created, and the project was intended to improve the usability of the Old Town Hall for tourism, weddings, and other events. According to critics, the proposed form of the plan did not sufficiently guarantee that the institutions currently operating in the house U Minuty could remain there.

The house U Minuty from the early 15th century is part of four houses where the city hall previously established the so-called Prague Creative Center. It offers space for various organizations at favorable rents; for example, the Scout Institute and the city’s Institute of Planning and Development (IPR) operate there. "The project does not guarantee that the existing functions, the Scout Institute and the creative center, can continue there," said councilor and MP Jan Čižinský. A similar objection was raised by deputy mayor Petra Kolínská (Greens/Triple Coalition).

Mayor Adriana Krnáčová (ANO) responded by stating that all existing organizations would be able to remain in the building even after the reconstruction. The director of the property department of the city hall, Jan Rak, added that the project was discussed with representatives of the institutions operating within the creative center. Nevertheless, there were ultimately not enough votes for the approval of the tender for the reconstruction with an estimated value of 130 million crowns.

In recent months, Prague has been renovating the tower of the Old Town Hall. In the first phase of the tower reconstruction, the statics of the stones were secured, safety bars were added to the windows of the walkway, and the golden elements on the tower were polished. The walkway was opened to the public last December. In March, the clock returned to the tower. The next step is the repair of the astronomical clock and the chapel of the Old Town Hall. Everything should be completed in time for this year's celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia. The total cost for the complete reconstruction will be 55 million crowns excluding VAT.
