On Friday, September 21, some drivers in Plzeň will be surprised. In several places in the city center, where parking is usually available, they will find an unusual revitalization of public space instead of empty parking spaces. Thanks to artists and involved non-profit organizations, for one day, available parking spots will be transformed into public parks. Everyone can participate in the transformation; all you need to do is reserve a spot at the parking meter and then reshape it according to your vision.
Park(ing) Day is a global event that has been held in many places since 2005, when it was first organized in San Francisco. This year, it will be held for the first time in Plzeň. In previous years, parking spots in various European capitals have turned into libraries, relaxation workshops, galleries, vegetable gardens, and hosted dance classes, poetry readings, and much more.
The main idea of the event is to revitalize the city's public space and create a vibrant and friendly environment for its residents. Last but not least, the project aims to provoke a public discussion about the use of public space and specific civic issues.
The event is organized by the civic association Město k světu in collaboration with the project Plzeň - European Capital of Culture 2015. Město k světu is a platform and shield for projects in public space. The goal is to identify and address deficiencies through the implementation of new projects and the organization of workshops. Various interventions aimed at improving public life in Plzeň are planned, such as repairs of city underpasses. The platform is led by young Plzeň architect Jakub Mareš.
