Prague - The City Hall of Prague 2 plans to first build an outdoor sports field on the land west of the Sokol building in Riegrovy Sady and subsequently construct a multifunctional hall intended for sports or cultural events. This was stated by the deputy mayor of the district, Jan Recman (ODS), at today's public meeting. The city hall is also preparing improvements to another part of Riegrovy Sady near Chopinova Street and the reconstruction of the playground at U Draka.
On the land that the city district wants to use for the sports facilities, there are currently two unauthorized constructions - the Ice Magic ice sculpture exhibition and the Containall sport and cultural center with a bar. According to the deputy mayor, both operators have already been requested by the building authority to remove the structures, which should happen in the coming months.
The land previously belonged to the state, but in property exchanges, it was acquired by the Prague magistrate, and the city district is seeking to have it entrusted to its management. "In the first phase, we would like to restore the playground that currently stands where the ice sculpture gallery is situated," Recman stated. He added that a multifunctional sports facility for ball sports complemented by a parkour area and refreshments should be created there.
The final plan of the city hall's leadership is to collaborate with Sokol to build multifunctional halls for sports and culture. "Our effort is to create something really beautiful that will last for decades or centuries," said the deputy mayor of TJ Sokol Královské Vinohrady, Petr Janů.
Recman added that several underground garage levels could be created beneath the building, which would also help with parking in Vinohrady. The city hall plans to discuss the project's details with the public, heritage protectors, and the city’s Institute of Planning and Development. According to the deputy mayor, an architectural competition is planned.
In the near future, according to Recman, the city hall is preparing minor adjustments in Riegrovy Sady. The closest is the reconstruction of the playground known as U Draka, which should start in October. Furthermore, the city district's leadership plans the final part of the park's renewal, consisting of adjustments to paths or greenery near Chopinova Street. "A small pond will also be created in the place of the currently buried reservoir," the deputy mayor stated. He added that the city hall's leadership is preparing regulations for organizing cultural events due to noise complaints.
Riegrovy Sady is an urban park that spans 11 hectares between Polská, Chopinova, U Rajské zahrady, and Italská streets. The park was established in the early 20th century on the site of former gardens and is named after the Czech politician František Ladislav Rieger.
