Old Town (Uherskohradišťsko) - The Memorial of Great Moravia in Old Town on Uherskohradišťsko is set to undergo extensive reconstruction. The current permanent exhibition no longer meets the standard needs of domestic and foreign visitors. Repairs are expected to cost between ten and 13 million crowns, with funding for the project being provided by the Zlín Region, the Slovácko Museum in Uherské Hradiště, and the Moravian Museum in Brno, and they intend to acquire funds from so-called Norwegian funds as well. This was stated today by the mayor of Old Town, Josef Bazala.
The Memorial of Great Moravia is one of the most significant national cultural monuments. The building was constructed between 1959 and 1960 over the foundations of the first discovered and recognized structure from the Great Moravian period, the Church of Na Valách. However, the memorial complex has not yet been completed to its planned form and extent. The facility does not allow for the publication of results from new archaeological research, hosting scientific meetings, and it provides almost no facilities for visitors and researchers.
The memorial will therefore undergo necessary repairs to the roof, electrical installations, and windows, the permanent exhibition will be modernized, and workers will construct modern presentation and service facilities, as well as appropriate spaces for a scientific research center with a depository, a specialized thematic library, study areas, and facilities for archaeological research. "There will thus be a unique Archaeological Center of Great Moravia in Central Pomoraví," said Ivo Florec, director of the Slovácko Museum in Uherské Hradiště.
As part of the development of tourism in the Zlín Region, there are also plans to connect significant Silesian, Moravian, and Slovak archaeological sites through an international tourist trail, which is to be named From Great Moravia to the Beginnings of Czech Statehood. The pilot site is expected to be the Memorial of Great Moravia.
If everything goes according to plan, the first phase of the reconstruction of the memorial will begin in the spring of next year.
