Pohořelice – The baroque Paar's castle, which underwent reconstruction for 44 million crowns, was today opened by representatives of the city and the region in Pohořelice near Brno. The two-story building, which had been deteriorating for over 20 years, will once again serve the students of the Pohořelice elementary school.
"The castle was originally used by the school club, it also had classrooms for workshops and a janitor's apartment. But after 1995, it was already in poor condition, it was not even possible to teach there, only the apartment served for some time. But it was practically just falling into disrepair, and the city was trying to figure out what to do with it," said the mayor of Pohořelice, Miroslav Novák (ODS).
Finally, the city succeeded in obtaining a grant from the IROP program through the Ministry of Regional Development, which covered 90 percent of the costs for the repair of the 17th-century building. The city contributed almost ten million from its own budget. The construction work lasted a year and a half.
"The building had to undergo a total reconstruction, including the floors, windows, and installations, of course in cooperation with conservationists. They conducted several surveys on site to determine which parts of the structure are original and which can be removed," added the mayor.
The two-story building has been renovated from the attic to the cellar, and the garden has also been restored, which features a small amphitheater for about 50 people. The building includes five classrooms for teaching natural sciences, languages, and computer skills.
"We would also like to use the building for after-school activities, whether for exhibitions, concerts, or theatrical performances," added Novák. People could only walk through the building's spaces today after the opening; starting in September, the castle will begin serving students.
