BRNO, October 1 (ČTK) - A joint performance by Mahen's Drama, Janáček's Opera, and the ballet ensemble of the Brno National Theatre tonight marked the opening of the reconstructed Reduta Theatre at Zelný trh in Brno. The venue, known among other things for hosting the young Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1767, opened its doors to the first visitors after 12 years. The building underwent extensive reconstruction over the past three years, costing nearly 400 million crowns.
The authors of the reconstruction design were the winners of the Grand Prix of the Union of Architects, Antonín Novák and Petr Valenta. They won the competition announced by the city for the reconstruction of the Reduta in 2001.
The restored valuable monument will offer 286 seats in the theater hall with an orchestra pit, a rotating stage, and modern stage technologies. An additional 450 standing places or 160 seated places are available in the adjacent Reduta Hall. The building's interiors were decorated with modern frescoes by painter Petr Kvíčala in three locations. For example, in the Reduta Hall, he used a combination of white waves on a red background.
The opening program featured a double premiere of a drama with the ballet The Soldier's Tale by Igor Stravinsky and the world premiere of Vít Zouhar's opera Night and Day. Stravinsky created the musical pantomime The Soldier's Tale for a small ensemble in 1918. The storyline is based on Russian fables and folk tales about a soldier and a devil.
The opera Night and Day is a loose continuation of Mozart's The Magic Flute. Zouhar created it based on a fragment of Goethe's poetic libretto The Magic Flute - Part Two.
Both pieces were conducted by Gabriela Tardonová.
Reduta was established in the early 17th century as a tavern. Later, the venue served as a hospital and, in modern history, as a marketplace or storage for vegetables sold at Zelný trh. The venue has been closed since 1993 due to its dilapidated condition. Repairs began in 2002.
