Prague - Due to demanding restoration work, the repair of the pavilion in Havlíčkovy sady will become more expensive. Originally, Prague 2 estimated the cost at around 45 million crowns; it now estimates that the reconstruction will amount to 60 million crowns, including a new extension. This was stated today by Deputy Mayor Jiří Paluska (ODS). The restoration should be completed by the middle of next year.
The original plan, according to Paluska, envisaged that the old part of the pavilion would be partially demolished and rebuilt as a replica. However, this will not be possible. "We have adopted a restoration method for the pavilion's renewal that is very gentle, but extremely expensive," noted Paluska. He also pointed out that the sewage connection, which runs through half of the park, is very expensive.
The city district has been striving for the restoration of the pavilion for about eight years. The work has been delayed by long discussions about the reconstruction method and problems with obtaining a building permit. The reconstruction includes the restoration of half-timbered walls, roofing, floors, windows, doors, the roof, as well as interior wall paintings and the completion of a new wing.
Currently, part of the pavilion has already been repaired, and a new extension is being built, which will house a café. "The new building will also have one underground floor where technology will be stored so that the building can be used year-round," added the deputy mayor.
The pavilion, which is part of the Gröbe's villa and Grébovka garden complex, was built in the 1880s. It originally served as a shooting range and bowling alley. It is part of Havlíčkovy sady. This heavily visited park, which is a cultural monument, was taken over by the Vinohrady town hall in 1999. It was in very neglected condition. The city district has already managed to repair, for example, the Gröbe's villa, the Viniční gazebo, the brick wall, and the entrance gates. Next year, the restoration of the grotto is also planned, where performances under the open sky should take place.
