Hradec Králové - The reconstruction of the department building in the campus of the Faculty of Military Health Sciences (FVZ) of the University of Defense in Hradec Králové will cost 220 million crowns and is expected to be completed in 2021. The repair work, which started this February, is being financed by the Ministry of Defense. CTK was informed today by the spokesperson of the University of Defense, Vladimír Šidla. The extensive modernization of the military faculty in Hradec has been ongoing since 2016, and the costs, including the repair of the department building on Třebešská Street, exceed half a billion crowns. Most of it comes from the budget of the Ministry of Defense.
"The departments have been relocated to temporary spaces in the former student dormitory during the construction work. Teaching is being conducted fully, although in limited spatial conditions," Šidla told CTK. The modernization of the six-story, 36-year-old department building aims to improve the conditions for teaching students, including the establishment of a top-notch research facility for military medics.
In the FVZ campus on Třebešská Street, the kitchen underwent modernization for nine million crowns in 2016 and 2017, and the garages were upgraded for eight million crowns in 2017. The costs for repairing the entrance part of the faculty building in 2019 were eight million. Another significant investment concerned the reconstruction of the dormitory on the campus at Akademika Heyrovského Street, costing 284 million crowns and taking place over two years starting in November 2017.
Further major investments in the repair of FVZ facilities will include the construction of a radioisotope laboratory on the premises of the Faculty Hospital (FN) Hradec Králové between 2022 and 2023. The estimated costs are 242 million crowns and will come from the budget of the Ministry of Defense.
FVZ in Hradec Králové operates in several locations. The main building of the faculty, known as the New Campus, is located on Třebešská Street next to the FN campus. The New Campus includes, for example, the Dean's office, departments, a kitchen block, and garages. The dormitory for student accommodation is in a high-rise building on Akademika Heyrovského Street near the Faculty of Pharmacy of Charles University (UK). The scientific research and teaching campus of FVZ is in the FN.
The Military Medical Academy was established in Hradec Králové in the 1920s. Over time, the name and structure of the institution changed. In 2004, when there were three military universities in the Czech Republic, the University of Defense was created, which took over the study programs of the military universities.
In Hradec Králové, the education of future military doctors, dentists, and pharmacists is linked to the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Pharmacy at UK and emergency medical services. Currently, FVZ in Hradec Králové has 196 students. However, the school's capacity is higher; the army only admits as many students as it needs. FVZ also educates doctors for the needs of the armed forces of the Slovak Republic. Currently, there are discussions regarding the utilization of the faculty's educational capacities for the needs of other ministries.
