Opava - The Opava cinema Mír will have air conditioning. The installation, costing approximately 1.4 million CZK, will start in the near future. The city council has already selected the supplier. It should be operational by the end of May. This was stated today by the city spokesperson Lada Dobrovolná. The cinema underwent a major renovation last year. However, the installation of air conditioning was not part of it.
During operation, it was discovered that the current air conditioning system is inadequate. "During the renovation, an air conditioning system with recuperation was installed in the building. However, summer operations showed that this solution is insufficient. It was suffocating inside. We received a number of complaints,” added Opava's mayor Tomáš Navrátil.
The cinema began its operations on July 10, 1965, with the Czechoslovak premiere of the film A Terrible Woman, which was produced in collaboration between Czech and East German productions. The space is owned by the city, but it is operated by a private entity. Not only are films screened here, but the hall also serves for various other events - theatrical performances, lectures, and concerts.
The renovation, costing over 33 million CZK, began last May. The interior, in particular, was refurbished. The project author Zuzana Stanjurová Mateiciucová based her work on a combination of contemporary materials and design with original elements, such as unique lights, railings, or graphic symbols, and photographs of film stars appear again. The period of the cinema's inception will also be recalled by period chairs, which will be fully restored and subsequently placed in the lobby. The city has asked the public for donations of chairs.
The work also affected the auditorium and technological equipment. The city's requirement was that the cinema hall accommodate at least 500 spectators; new seats, a stage, stage lighting, public restrooms, and all facilities for performers and employees were installed. The electrical installation was renewed. The project documentation also addressed the design of the facade. Cinema Mír was also digitized, while the option to screen classic thirty-five millimeter films from old projectors remains.
