Ostrava – A new public space is being created on the left bank of the Ostravice River in the center of Ostrava. A suspended gallery will be added to Havlíčkovo Embankment in the section between Miloš Sýkora Bridge and Hradní footbridge. By raising the bank wall, the builders will spatially separate the cycling route from the pedestrian sidewalk and adjust the surrounding areas and communications. The place will be complemented by benches, loungers, trash bins, as well as trees and flower beds with perennials. The work is expected to be completed in September. This was announced today by the spokesperson of the city council, Andrea Vojkovská.

"The adjustments to Havlíčkovo Embankment are another of the planned stages of the overall aesthetic enhancement of the area around the river in the city center. We have been working on this since 2015. We started with the right bank of the Ostravice, where we first cleaned the entire section from the boathouse to Sýkora Bridge of waste, rubble, and non-prospecting greenery. We repaired the bridge pillar of the original shooting gallery and built new terraces for seating and a viewpoint under the statue of Miloš Sýkora. We equipped the area by Hradní footbridge with new furniture and planted many new trees, ornamental shrubs, and other greenery," reminded Deputy Mayor Kateřina Šebestová (ANO).

The current modifications to the Ostravice River will include the construction of a new suspended gallery covering an area of 260 square meters. Part of the gallery will feature stone pavement. In places, the surface will be complemented by glass panels made of laminated glass with anti-slip treatment, which will be illuminated by spotlights. The cycling path, sidewalks, and the road surface will also be adjusted.

"An important part of the construction, besides the suspended gallery and the widening of the space by the bank wall, is also the safer routing for cyclists and pedestrians. Until now, it was a potentially collision site. The cycling path and pedestrian route will be separated," added Šebestová.

Following the reconstruction of this part of Havlíčkovo Embankment, a second construction will begin in May, covering the section between Na Hradbách and Kostelní streets, including the descent from 28. října street to the embankment. A new sidewalk will be added in this section, the cycling path along the river will be reconstructed with separate routes for cyclists and pedestrians, and new greenery will be planted. The retaining wall on the descent from 28. října street will also be repaired. The work is expected to be completed by the end of this year. The reconstruction of the first section will cost 27.6 million crowns, while the modifications to the second part will amount to 11.9 million crowns.
