Prague, December 26 (ČTK) - Overview of selected anticipated cultural events in the Czech Republic in 2007:

JANUARY
The Karlovy Vary Region Museum, based in Cheb, will begin its activities, formed by the merger of three former district museums in Cheb, Sokolov, and Karlovy Vary.
1. - The amendment to the law on certain conditions for the production, distribution, and archiving of audiovisual works (No. 249/2006 Coll.) comes into effect.
- The project of introducing the internet into public libraries is transferred from the Ministry of Informatics to the Ministry of Culture.
- The administration of Prague Castle changes its visitor circuit system. Instead of seven, it introduces two basic and independently accessible routes: The Story of Prague Castle and the Picture Gallery.
- David Mareček becomes the new director of the Brno Philharmonic, succeeding the current dramaturg.
- Deadline for submissions of works from amateurs, independent creators, and film school students for screening at the international festival of non-commercial feature films Dreamland, which will take place on March 17 and 18 in Prague.

10. - In Prague (11:00 AM, Café Rudolfinum, Alšovo nábřeží 12, Prague 1) a press conference will inaugurate the exhibition of the founder of modern Japanese photography Shomei Tomatsu titled The Skin of the Nation. The vernissage will be at 6:00 PM in the hall of the Rudolfinum. The exhibition will last until April 15.
- In Prague (7:30 PM, Municipal House, Smetana Hall, náměstí Republiky 5, Prague 1) a singing recital by Maltese tenor Joseph Calleja will take place. He will be accompanied by the Prague Symphony Orchestra and conductor Mark Chichon.
- The deadline for the third year of the Plzeň Orpheus competition for the best young musicians in the city, announced by the 700 Years Foundation of the City of Pilsen. The prize will be presented to the winner at the foundation's ceremonial ball in March.
- In Trutnov (5:00 PM, Gallery of the City of Trutnov) an exhibition of works by artist Miloš Trýzna titled Poetry of Trees opens. It will last until February 9.
- In Zlín (7:00 PM, House of Art, náměstí T. G. Masaryka 2570) a charitable New Year concert will be held by Zlín Region and the statutory city of Zlín.

- Menzel's film adaptation of Hrabal's novel I Served the King of England will be released in cinemas.
- In Prague (6:00 PM, Chamber of Deputies, Democracy Lounge, entrance from Malostranské náměstí, Prague 1) a meeting of the non-profit organization Znojemský hrozen for the international festival of television and radio programs about gastronomy Znojemský hrozen will take place.
- In Prague (7:55 PM, Ungelt Theatre, Malá Štupartská 1, Prague 1) - premiere of the play Dumb Show by director Lukáš Hlavica.
- In Třebíč (5:00 PM, Back Synagogue, Subakova 1) an exhibition titled Places of Suffering, Death, and Heroism begins, which conveys the issue of concentration camps through photographs and texts, documenting the reality in individual camps. The last two of a total of 28 panels highlight the dangers of neo-Nazism and Holocaust denial. It will last until March 4, 2007.
12. - In Prague (7:30 PM, Disk Theatre, Karlova 26, Prague 1) the premiere of the play Spring Awakening by director Ondřej Pavelka begins. This is the third graduation performance of students from the 4th year of the Department of Alternative and Puppet Theatre at DAMU 2006/2007.
- In Trutnov (6:00 PM, National House) a literary evening will be held featuring the presentation and signing of a new historical-ethnographic study by Václav Jirásek titled On the Mining of Coal in the Markoušovicko-Svatoňovicko Area in the Jestřebí Mountains.
15. - The National Theatre in Prague is expected to have a new director by this date, selected from the application procedure.
- The deadline for the tenth year of the media competition Media Helping Monuments, announced by the civic association Pro Bohemia and the Czech Syndicate of Journalists. More at www.pro-bohemia.cz.

17. - In Prague (10:00 AM, Karolinum, Cross Hall, gallery, Ovocný trh 3, Prague 1) an exhibition of photographs from Norway and Iceland by Petra Doležalová titled Touches of the North begins. It will last until February 6.
18. - A new Czech horror film Gardeners by director Marcel Bystroně will be released in cinemas.
21. - A social evening at the Karlín Musical Theatre in Prague will inaugurate the twelfth year of the Prague exhibition of regional scenes Czech Theatre. The spring section will feature thirteen productions.
25. - In Prague (Valdštejn Palace, Valdštejnské náměstí 4, Prague 1) the Petr Parléř Award for 2006 will be awarded to architect Zbyněk Ryška for his design of the Svobody Square in Přerov.
- In Prague (Světozor Cinema, Vodičkova 41, Prague 1) the film by British director Ken Loach titled The Wind Rises will open the 14th year of the Days of European Film. 26. In Ostrava (House of Culture of the City of Ostrava) the two-day international music festival Winter Colours of Ostrava begins.
29. - The deadline for applications for the sixth year of the Magnesia Litera book awards. Publishers and other entities can submit books published in 2006 in seven categories. The winners will be announced on April 22.
31. - The deadline for the photography competition on the theme New Face of Karlín - transformations of the district Prague 8 - Karlín after the floods in 2002. The competition was announced by the Union of Czech Photographers, and the best photos will be exhibited as part of the series Prague Then and Now at the Gallery of the Union of Czech Photographers. - The Czech premiere of the film by director Miloš Forman Goya's Ghosts will take place in Prague. Besides the director, the main role actors Natalie Portman, Javier Bardem, and Stellan Skarsgård, producer Saul Zaentz, and screenwriter Jean-Claude Carrière are expected to attend the premiere.

FEBRUARY
2. - The deadline for the second round of the competition for the design of the new National Library building. The winning design will be announced on March 3, 2007.

11. - The seventh year of the Festival of Laughter begins in Pardubice; it will last until February 18.
13. - In Prague (7:30 PM, Club Roxy, Dlouhá 33, Prague 1) a concert by the Finnish band Leningrad Cowboys.
22. - A feature film debut by Mirjam Land titled Kvaska will be released in cinemas.
- In Prague (7:00 PM, National Theatre, Národní 2, Prague 1) the premiere of the play Tom Stoppard's Rock'n'Roll will take place, directed by Ivan Rajmont.
27. - Prague's Kalich Theatre (7:00 PM, Jungmannova 9, Prague 1) will premiere the new Czech musical Jack the Ripper.
- In Prague (7:30 PM, Municipal House, Smetana Hall, náměstí Republiky 5, Prague 1) Mexican tenor Rolando Villazón will perform. The Prague Chamber Philharmonic will be conducted by Italian conductor Daniele Callegari.
28. - The deadline for submission of applications for support for short-term international cooperation projects and multi-year projects from the new cultural program of the European Commission for 2007 - 2013 Culture 2007. More at www.culture.2000.cz.

APRIL
