Troubky nad Bečvou (Přerov region) - With the opening of an exhibition capturing the changes in the municipality, the residents of Troubky nad Bečvou in the Přerov region today launched a four-day commemoration event for the catastrophic floods of 1997. Besides the exhibition, which features large-format photographs from the time of the floods, these events will also be commemorated through a mass and a memorial act. The disaster in Troubky destroyed over 300 houses in 1997 and claimed the lives of nine people.
"The subtitle of the exhibition is Changes in the Municipality or Ten Years Later. The purpose is to show people how it looked here during the floods and how the municipality has changed since then. It is not just about remembering the flood but also capturing what has changed since," said the mayor of the municipality, Radek Brázda, to ČTK today.
In addition to photos from the time of the floods, people can view what the municipality has gone through in the last ten years at the exhibition until Sunday. "It is a kind of overview of the history of the municipalities over the past ten years. People can see what has changed here, there are also projects that are being prepared. Events that have taken place here over the last ten years are not missing," added the mayor.
Troubky nad Bečvou has changed beyond recognition since the floods. Approximately 200 new houses have been built in the municipality, and several dozen municipal apartments have also been constructed. The peaceful Hanácká village, with houses sparkling with newness, now resembles a newly built satellite town. "People continue to arrive and are interested in building. We rather have a problem offering them new places. The village is completely new; it has a modern face," noted the mayor.
In addition to the exhibition, the residents of Troubky will also commemorate the tragic events with a mass, a memorial act in front of the victims' monument, and a ceremonial baptism of an almanac for the 10th anniversary of the flood in the municipality.
The catastrophic floods affected the residents of Troubky nad Bečvou on July 7, 1997. The disaster claimed nine lives and leveled half of the village. Previously little-known and peaceful Hanácká village became a symbol of the devastating floods that ravaged a large part of Moravia.
