Brno - The space near the Svratka River on Poříčí Street in Brno will also be enlivened by the artistic processing of new flood protection walls. The city council was introduced today to a proposal for adjustments to three walls. These include Bakalovo embankment, Poříčí, and Táborská embankment, said city hall spokesman Filip Poňuchálek to ČTK. The artistic competition could begin in two to three months. The work would follow the occupancy permit of the construction, probably in the summer or early autumn.

"The new flood protection walls by the Svratka have great potential. Their possible artistic processing could contribute to the creation of a new interesting place near the center, where both locals and visitors will go for relaxation," stated Poňuchálek.

At Bakalovo embankment, the city would announce an artistic competition. The implementation would be ensured by the Brno-střed district. On Poříčí, the district could collaborate with partners, such as universities, to devise and create the artistic concept for this wall. On Táborská embankment, a two-day event is planned under the patronage of the House of Art of the City of Brno, where selected artists would create murals. A financial contribution of 800,000 crowns is proposed for the House of Art of the City of Brno, with the final decision resting with the councilors.

The construction of flood protection measures in the section from Riviera through Poříčí to the railway viaduct on Uhelná Street began in 2022. The completion date has been postponed several times, and the work has been prolonged due to last year's September floods. The new paths are expected to be accessible at the turn of April and May. The remaining work will mainly concern the modeling of the riverbed. The construction is estimated to cost 1.4 billion crowns excluding tax.
