Brno - The title of the best-restored monument of South Moravia for last year was awarded to the Catholic Church of St. John the Baptist in Valtrovice in the Znojmo region. This was decided by the participants in a survey of the South Moravian Region, who gave it 2,185 out of 8,000 submitted votes. The second place was taken by the Church of St. Nicholas from Tvarožná near Brno, and the third place went to the Czech Brethren Church from Vanovice in Blanensko. The results are available on the South Moravian Region's website. Its representatives will officially announce the results of the survey in June. The owner of the building, which is the church, will receive a main prize of 150,000 crowns from the regional office. The winner can use the money for further repairs to the monument or for landscaping around the church. The church was established at the beginning of the 13th century. During last year's restoration, it received a new roof. The original wooden trusses had to be replaced due to woodworm. The church also has a restored façade. This year, the municipality, associations, and individuals nominated 23 monuments from the region for the award. These included the Strelniční Tower in Znojmo, the Marian Column in Drnholec in the Břeclav region, the castle in Slavkov, and the reconstructed synagogue in Mikulov. This year, 8,000 people participated in the voting, which is nearly 3,000 more than last year. The aim of the survey is to increase public interest in monuments in the region and to encourage their owners to take better care of them. Last year, the competition was won by the restored Church of the Assumption of the Holy Cross in Chvalatice in the Znojmo region.
