Zlín - The unfinished shopping center located in the Jižní Svahy housing estate in Zlín will be demolished by September. The city is currently selecting a company to carry out the demolition. Bidders for the contract must propose a method for removing the skeleton structure. However, blasting has already been ruled out as the structure is located in a residential area, making this technology unsuitable, said Mayor Miroslav Adámek (STAN) to ČTK today.

It is most likely that the structure will be gradually dismantled, as was previously done with the unfinished building in Čepkov. According to the city hall spokesperson, Zdeněk Dvořák, there is significant interest from companies in the contract.

Preparatory work should begin in May. The removal of the reinforced concrete skeleton, including the basement and foundation structures, will create a crater the size of a football field, six to eight meters deep. "For this reason, soil from the construction being carried out by Tomas Bata University on Štefánikova Street is currently being brought in. It will subsequently be used to fill this crater," Dvořák stated.

The removal of the structure will cost 25 million crowns. The concrete rubble will be crushed and used as a base material for repairs of roads and sidewalks. "This way, we will save millions of crowns on aggregate," said councilor Josef Novák (STAN).

The building was constructed in 1988. It was intended to serve as a shopping center but was never completed and has been deteriorating since then. The city has repeatedly tried to purchase it, successfully doing so two years ago. The city hall will decide on the future use of the approximately 35,000 m² of land in the future. The residents of the city will express their opinions in a survey.
