Zlín - Residents of the regional city of Zlín can express their opinions on what should be built on the site of the unfinished shopping center in the Jižní Svahy housing estate. The concrete skeleton has stood there since the late 1980s, and this year the city began its demolition. After its removal, the city will have a very valuable development area available. The construction of a shopping center is not included in the zoning plan. This was stated today by city hall spokesman Zdeněk Dvořák.
After the demolition, which is expected to be completed in October, landscape modifications are planned to integrate the area with the existing Central Park. However, people can submit proposals for what could be built there in the future. "We will definitely consider them and pass them on to the next city hall leadership. Because it will take years to prepare and secure financing for construction on the site after the skeleton is removed," said Mayor Miroslav Adámek (STAN).
People can express their opinions in a survey that will last until the end of August. The survey form is available in the Zlín Magazine, as well as on the city's website www.zlin.eu, in the "You May Be Interested" section, under the link "Survey on Land Use."
The city will pay nearly five million crowns for the demolition of the building. A specialized company is crushing the concrete into smaller pieces. The city will use the material as a sub-base layer for the reconstruction of roads, sidewalks, and bike paths.
The building was constructed in 1988. It was intended to serve as a department store but was never completed and has been deteriorating since then. The city has repeatedly attempted to purchase it, succeeding in doing so two years ago, acquiring the building and the adjacent land of about 39,000 square meters for 53 million crowns. This is the largest development area currently available to Zlín.
