Prague - The silhouette of a bridge is beginning to take shape in the south of Prague, which will span the valleys of the Berounka and Vltava rivers. Once completed, it will be the longest bridge structure in the country, with a total length of 2.3 kilometers. Today, the head of the Road and Motorway Directorate, Alfred Brunclík, presented the construction on the southern part of the Prague Ring Road to journalists and conducted an inspection on site.

Builders refer to the bridge as the Lahovická viaduct, which in places reaches a height of up to 50 meters. The construction is part of the planned connection between highways D5 and D1, which measures 23 kilometers and will cost the state approximately 24 billion crowns. The connection to D1 will be the largest motorway interchange in the Czech Republic.
"There is indeed a great concentration of unique technical pieces here," said Brunclík. The route includes a total of four kilometers of tunnels, with the mentioned bridge leading from tunnel to tunnel. An unusual steel bridge over the Lochkov Valley is also said to be built using the pushing technique. Foreign experts reportedly come to admire the construction.
The length of the longest Czech bridges does not significantly exceed one kilometer. According to the internet encyclopedia Wikipedia, the longest motorway bridge is over the Ohře River near Doksany (1183 m), the second is the 150-year-old Negrelli Viaduct in Prague (1110 m), and the third is a motorway bridge over the tracks in Trmice in the Ústí region (1085 m).
Drivers will first traverse the new "southern" connector between the Plzeň and Brno motorways in mid-2010. The section is expected to relieve the existing Southern Connector and Barrandov Bridge, which sees more than 100,000 vehicles daily. About 60,000 of them are expected to be taken over by the new motorway.
While Brunclík believes that the completion of the southern connection should not be jeopardized, questions remain over other sections of the Prague Ring Road. The total length of the ring is supposed to be 83 kilometers, with 17 km completed.
European funds are contributing to the financing of existing constructions; however, this will not be possible for further sections. In addition to a lack of funds, the ring is also threatened by disputes between the investor (Road and Motorway Directorate) and ecologists and civic associations.
In addition to journalists, Brunclík also focused on the inspection today. "Otherwise, gentlemen, you have quite a mess here," he pointed out to the builders at the entrance of one of the tunnels. He added that such disorder would only be tolerable for construction in Siberia.

The longest domestic bridges:
Lahovická viaduct (completion 2010), motorway - Prague ring, 2300 m
bridge over the Ohře near Doksany, motorway D8, 1183 m
Negrelli Viaduct Prague, railway, 1110 m
bridge over the track in Trmice, motorway D8, 1085 m
Knínice Bridge, motorway D8, 1071 m
