Brno - The City Theater in Brno will receive seven million korunas from the city budget for the completion of the hall and interiors. The grant was approved by the Brno city councilors. They increased the original contribution from the city, which was more than ninety million. The original grant for the completion of the project was insufficient, hence the need to increase the funds, said Deputy Mayor Ladislav Macek (ČSSD) to reporters today. After the completion of the hall, construction work at the theater should be finished.
With the funds, the areas for the main box office, offices, rehearsal rooms for actors, choir hall, and operational facilities, where costumes are sewn and fitted, will be completed at the theater site. Currently, the theater has these workshops in a former kindergarten building on Nopova Street in Brno-Židenice, so actors and seamstresses have to travel between Lidická Street in the center, where the theater is located, and Židenice. A restaurant should also be created in the theater's interior.
The theater director Stanislav Moša told ČTK today that the investment in the hall will conclude the construction works at the theater, which have lasted several years. According to the original plans, the hall, the reconstruction of which is coordinated by the investment department of the Brno city hall, was supposed to be finished in 2004. In the same year, the theater opened a newly built music stage. The construction of the stage, which is one of the most modern arenas for musical theater in the Czech Republic, cost 450 million korunas. Most of the funds came from the state budget, with the city contributing 80 million korunas.
Due to the high investments in the city theater, Brno has faced criticism in the past for favoring this venue over other cultural institutions in the city. Deputy Mayor Macek responded today to this objection by justifying that what has been started in the theater should be completed. "There is a vision of how the city theater should look. I consider it right to add seven million today to complete it," stated Macek.
