Hradec Králové - The Hradec Králové Region has five new cultural monuments as of this year. Three of them are in Hořice in the Jičín region; for example, the Ministry of Culture declared Masaryk's Tower of Independence a monument.
Masaryk's Tower of Independence, which began construction in 1926 and stands 25 meters tall, is a prominent landmark visible from afar in Hořice. The lookout tower has become a memorial site and monument to the victims of World War I and II, as well as the anti-communist resistance. In the late 1990s, a large sculpture titled "Legions Abroad" by sculptor František Ducháč - Vyskočil was installed at the lookout tower after a complete renovation.
According to information from the ministry, new monuments also include a stone Tuscan column from Hankovo Square in Hořice and a column with a statue of Saint Isidore, located in Libonice on the outskirts of Hořice. "We certainly welcome the listing on the monument registry; there is a chance to obtain funds for restoration and repairs. At the same time, it obliges us to take care of these monuments," said Hořice Mayor Ivan Doležal to ČTK today. The town hall is considering insulating the basement of Masaryk's Tower of Independence so that it can also be accessible to the public.
Other newly declared monuments in Hradec Králové Region include a statue at a house in Vrbice near Rychnov and a column with a statue of Saint Anthony of Padua with the Christ Child in Bobr near Trutnov. Nationwide, the ministry declared 43 monuments in the first half of the year.
