KRNAP and the municipalities want to limit the construction of apartment buildings

Vrchlabí (Trutnov region) - The administration of the Krkonošsko National Park (KRNAP) and the municipalities in the Krkonoš region want to limit further construction of apartment buildings in the Krkonoš Mountains as much as possible. Conservationists have created a memorandum urging municipalities to cooperate in halting further construction and recommending how to resist the pressure from investors. The document has been supported by over 30 mayors. This was reported by today's Mladá fronta Dnes in its supplement for the Hradec Králové region.
    In the last ten years, over 3,500 apartments have been built or are being prepared for construction in the Krkonoš Mountains. Local residents fear that the mountains will soon lose their typical character. "About 50,000 people live permanently in the Krkonoš villages. I do not know of any city in the republic with a similar population that could match the Krkonoš region in residential construction,” said Jiří Novák, director of the KRNAP administration.
    According to him, buildings are already encroaching into areas outside the village centers, and there is a risk that aggressive development companies will start building in the open countryside as well. Municipalities should now limit the sale of land to developers as much as possible, not agree to inappropriate projects in administrative proceedings, and declare construction moratoriums until they approve their zoning plans.
    The largest apartment complex in the Krkonoš Mountains has been under construction for four years in Horní Mísečky above Špindlerův Mlýn. The accommodation capacity of the area, which includes dozens of mountain houses with double apartments, is expected to be around 500 beds upon completion. The park administration granted approval for the construction of the Mísečky complex in the second half of the 1990s.
    Hundreds of new recreational apartments have already been created or are in preparation in other resorts as well. Harrachov holds the record with 1,186 apartments, in Špindlerův Mlýn conservationists counted 886 apartments, and in Pec pod Sněžkou, there are 492. In the overwhelming majority of cases, these are new constructions or renovations of former company holiday houses.
