Prague - Cultural and creative industries earn significantly more from the sale of services related to research and development than, for instance, the automotive industry. They are primarily driven by architectural and engineering activities and information and communication technologies, with a significant share also from software publishing, including computer games. This was shown by a study from the Institute of Art - Theatre Institute, which collaborated with the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic.
The cultural and creative industries include not only the artistic fields themselves, such as film, theater, visual arts, and music, but also design, advertising, digitization, and the development of software and computer games. According to the authors of the study, this sector plays an important role in the area of innovation. "Cultural, artistic, and creative inputs are now being recognized as another strategic raw material for developed economies," stated one of the authors, Marcel Kraus, in a press release.
The study focused on how the cultural and creative sectors contribute to development and research compared to the automotive, engineering, and chemical industries. The most recent data used were from 2012. Three years ago, the creative sector generated nearly four billion crowns in revenue from the sale of research and development services contracted by other entities.
This is almost one and a half times more than the automotive and engineering industries combined. The engineering industry accounted for 1.6 billion crowns, and the automotive industry for 930 million crowns. Compared to 2010, revenues in cultural and creative industries increased by 78.2%, while in the automotive industry it was 90%.
More employees are involved in research and development in cultural and creative activities, across more workplaces than in the comparable industrial sectors. This is also associated with higher expenses. In creative activities, expenditures reached 8.2 billion crowns in 2012, of which 70% came from private sources. The automotive industry spent a total of 4.6 billion crowns on research, the engineering sector 3.8 billion, and the chemical industry one billion crowns.
