Kladno - Kladno wants to start transforming the Lidice barracks next year, where a university campus for the ČVUT faculty is to be established. The long-planned work will begin with the reconstruction of the main building of the barracks, estimated to cost 100 to 150 million crowns. The city wants to pay part of the funds from European grants, which it plans to apply for by September at the latest. This was stated today by Mayor Dan Jiránek (ODS) to reporters. The total construction of the campus is expected to cost around 500 million crowns, with the school also contributing to the financing. According to Jiránek, the reconstruction will involve the overhaul of the main building, which served as accommodation for soldiers. According to a previous statement from the school, part of the bachelor's programs should be relocated there, with health professionals or physiotherapists from the Faculty of Biomedical Engineering studying there, for example. Besides the renovation, according to Jiránek, the capacity of the heating water system also needs to be expanded, which is currently insufficient. "In addition, ČVUT is designing the construction of lecture halls to complement this," Jiránek added. According to him, the construction of lecture rooms will cost an additional 100 million, and 300 million crowns will be needed for the construction of a completely new building planned in the barracks. The Kladno campus of ČVUT is currently located in a building called Kokos and has a capacity of 1700 students, which will soon no longer be sufficient. The school plans to accommodate around 3000 students in the largest Central Bohemian city in the coming years, so it needs to expand its facilities. Discussions about the renovation of the Kladno barracks have been ongoing for many years. The city initially considered that a university for dentists could be established there. Eventually, this was abandoned due to a lack of funding. Since 2009, the municipal dental emergency service has been operating in the barracks area, and the barracks also serve as a temporary parking lot during larger sporting events held nearby. However, according to Jiránek, this is rather sporadic use of the space.
