Kdyně (Domažlice) - The large Sokol hall from the early 20th century has been renovated thanks to an EU grant by the five-thousand-strong town of Kdyně in Domažlice. The building features a large hall that can seat up to 600 people, which is probably the highest capacity in the Domažlice district. In addition to cultural events, the Sokol hall will also provide improved facilities for sports and physical activities. The total costs for the first phase of the reconstruction were 29.5 million crowns, of which the EU grant was 21.5 million crowns, said the mayor Jan Löffelmann today to ČTK.
"These funds allowed not only partial adjustments to the hall and gym but also the renovation of the entire facilities, including those for volleyball and table tennis. There is a new room for karate and rehabilitation sports, and a modern four-lane bowling alley," he listed. The Sokol hall also features a renovated stage and its facilities, changing rooms, and showers for athletes. The building has received a new roof and reinforced rafters and beams, with updated utilities and improved heating. The project also included a new parking lot for 60 cars on the site of the former old barns and buildings. The entire Sokol hall is accessible for the disabled.
The town also had to deal with woodworm in the rafters and walls. The town hall also restored the main hall to its former look. They had the original Art Nouveau decorations and stuccos restored, which had been replaced by operational needs after the war. "Sports will not return to the large hall, as we have a nice, quality sports hall at the school," said the mayor. The hall, which can accommodate hundreds of people during balls and social events, will serve cultural purposes. To achieve better sound quality, the interior was lined with acoustic panels.
The local Sokol organization received the Sokol hall back in restitution after November 1989. "However, they financially could not manage the operations, let alone the renovation, so they donated the hall to the town a few years ago," said the mayor. According to him, the goal of the renovations was to restore the building's former glory and combine the possibility of using communal spaces while also providing people with additional sports facilities. A second phase of the renovation is expected to follow, which will involve the creation of two outdoor clay courts for volleyball, among other things.
