Brno - The South Moravian Region wants to create a model for the controversial R52 road, which is intended to complete the connection between Brno and Vienna. People would be able to see the proposed route of the road on it. The council approved the announcement of a tender for the company that will carry out the project. The model aims to prevent speculation such as the project passing through the Lednice-Valtice area, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, said Governor Stanislav Juránek to reporters today.
"Our goal is to avoid mainly misinformation about this route towards Brussels," said Juránek. According to him, a recent visit by European Commissioner Danuta Hübner in Brno showed that contradictory information about the road is being received in the European Union.
It is up to the selected company whether to create a model of the road that people can view, for example, at the regional office, or to choose a digital format. Then interested parties could find a map with the outlined road online. "We want it to be as accurate a representation as possible and accessible to as many people as possible," said the governor.
The model will show both the proposed route of the R52 and the current road from Pohořelice to Mikulov. People will thus be able to compare both routes. According to Juránek, it will not be the case that additional two lanes will be added to the existing two-lane road in all sections. For example, the road over the Nové Mlýny reservoirs curves, the radius of which is too small for a highway; the future four-lane road will need to travel a straighter path over the reservoirs and will only partially follow the route of the current road.
The R52 road is one of the most controversial transport projects in South Moravia. The current regional coalition of KDU-ČSL and ODS advocates the connection between Brno and Vienna via Nové Mlýny and Mikulov. In contrast, some municipalities along the road, as well as greens and environmentalists, are against it. They would prefer that cars traveling to Vienna use the existing highway from Brno to Břeclav, and a new connection would be built from there to the border. Both sides claim that their solution is more environmentally friendly.
