Industrial traces in the landscape and cities - invitation to the symposium
The lookout symposium will highlight on June 1, 2017, the troubled fates of often overlooked, forgotten, and small buildings.
Significant, monumentally protected, or iconic works are generally known and discussed. However, there is another layer of industrial heritage that is perceived more on a local level. This includes small railway buildings, municipal waterworks and water towers, brickworks, small local breweries, warehouse buildings, workshop and repair operations, or lonely malt houses, crumbling lime kilns, remnants of structures at abandoned quarries, local chapels for transformers, wall fragments, and protruding chimneys from factories in the landscape. This represents a specific cultural layer of settlements and landscapes that still remains outside the interest and is endangered, although it should be perceived as part of cultural heritage and the intellectual as well as material wealth of society.
This year's lookout symposium, Forgotten Industrial Traces of the Landscape and City, dedicated to small industrial objects, will take place on June 1, 2017, organized by the Industrial Traces platform in collaboration with the Research Center for Industrial Heritage of the Faculty of Architecture CTU and the Collegium for Technical Monuments of ČKAIT and ČSSI, in cooperation with the Czech National Committee of ICOMOS and the National Heritage Institute. It is intended for attentive travelers and fans of industrial traces.
The lookout symposium will travel from Prague's Smíchov (with an introduction at an abandoned transformer station), through Velká Chuchle to Řevnice (with a second presentation block in a former wooden railway warehouse), through Srbsko, Liteň, and Jince to the Hostomice brickworks and Fabián. It is intended for attentive travelers and fans of industrial traces.
During the travel symposium, authors of the complementary unique database of industrial heritage in the Czech Republic and experts on the topic will present their brief contributions – Pavel Jákl and Milan Starec (breweries and brewery cellars), Martin Vonka (factory chimneys), Michal Zlámaný (small railway buildings), Radim Urbánek (water mills), Robert Kořínek (waterworks and water tanks). More general contributions by Benjamin Fragner, Svatopluk Zídek, Eva Dvořáková, Lukáš Beran, Jakub Potůček, and Jan Zikmund will be complemented by practical examples of rescuing overlooked buildings – primarily Patrik Hoffman (transformer station in Zatlanka), Jan Holub (waterworks in Nebušice), Šárka Sodomková (Dřevák in Řevnice), or the Nezevli association (Petzold's quarry in Srbko). Experiences from rescuing small objects will also be presented by Jan Červinka from the Institute for Monuments and Culture and several others.
Several other surprises are also prepared for the event. Participants will receive informational materials on the topic, and a publication will be produced from the contributions.
