Hradec Králové - The city of Hradec Králové has postponed the deadline for submitting proposals for the architectural-urban competition for the new square and apartment building in the Kukleny district. The original deadline was February 6, the new one is February 11. The postponement was requested by applicants seeking clarification on the competition conditions. This is evident from the competition assignment on the contractor's profile. The city has so far provided seven clarifications regarding the competition, answering 69 questions. The square on the site of the former tannery is to become the center of the developing neighborhood on the western edge of the city.

Architects are to propose not only the square of New Kukleny but also a residential block for the city's planned cooperative housing. The apartment building would be located near Pražská třída and the new square. Architects will need to incorporate the chimney of the former tannery into the square.

The area of the Kukleny brownfield, measuring nearly 14 hectares, has an exceptional potential for creating a new center of the neighborhood, where nearly 1,900 people could find a home, according to the city hall. The architectural competition addresses a site of over half a hectare, of which more than half should be occupied by the apartment building, and the rest will be the square.

The architectural competition is two rounds. From the submitted proposals, an expert jury will anonymously select five concepts, whose author teams will be invited by the city hall to submit more detailed designs. Proposal submissions for the second phase are scheduled for April 10.

The dilapidated building of the former tannery in Kukleny from the 19th century was demolished by the city in 2023. As a reminder of the extensive industrial complex built from exposed brick, only the chimney remains. In 2014, the city had the characteristic clock tower removed from the factory hall, which is now stored in a warehouse at the airport. The tower and brick masonry from the demolished structures can be incorporated into the architects' designs.

Nearby the former tannery complex, the Hradec developer Noho previously announced a residential project with approximately 220 apartments. The first building, Cihlovka 1, with 22 apartments was built by the company in Kukleny in 2021, and the building Cihlovka 2 with 48 apartments was completed in 2023. Investor Pavel Ludvík is preparing a building with 74 apartments near the future square. Recently, the Thera apartment building with 65 apartments has also risen near Cihlovka.
