Sedlec

The restoration of the historic brick bridge from the 17th century is nearing completion. Thanks to the collaboration between the municipality of Sedlec and the Austrian Drasenhofen within the Portz Insel project, led by the city of Mikulov, the historic bridge with fifteen brick arches is being returned to its original form and will likely be opened to the public by the end of June. The bridge is part of the cultural monument complex of the Portz Insel summer palace.
The Portz Insel project is being implemented by the lead partner, the city of Mikulov, in cooperation with the partner municipalities, which are Sedlec and the Austrian Drasenhofen. Its main goal is to restore the historic brick bridge with fifteen arches, return it to its original appearance, and make it accessible to the public. The bridge is part of the cultural monument complex of the Portz Insel summer palace from the 17th century.
The repair of the bridge took place in several stages. First, it was necessary to repair the existing preserved parts below the bridge's cornice at the road level. In many cases, it was possible to use the original high-quality bricks found in the vicinity of the bridge. The next stage was to supplement the missing masonry railing. For this purpose, new bricks had to be brought in. However, the original height of the railing did not meet today's standards, so a simple blacksmith's extension was added. One interesting aspect of the bridge reconstruction is that during the cleaning of the roadway from the layer of soil, which at some points was up to 0.5 meters thick, the original limestone pavement from the time of the bridge's construction, during the reign of Cardinal Dietrichstein, was discovered. This pavement was also saved and will serve its original purpose.
The bridge was supposed to open at the end of April this year, but the project had to be altered, and the opening was postponed to the end of June. Unexpected circumstances arose during the construction work. After carrying out excavations and removing soil around the bridge due to the reconstruction of the bridge piers, it was supposed to be redirected to its original route, into a newly constructed elevated concrete channel. Construction work was interrupted during the winter, and the pumping of water from the lowered terrain ceased. However, in spring, the groundwater level rose, and it is now completely equal to the level of the existing stream at the site of the lowered area around the bridge. This necessitates a change in the project. The goal is to remove the banks of the channel over a length of 12 meters below the historic brick bridge. This would create a natural continuous small water surface of approximately one thousand square meters around the bridge.
In addition to the work on the bridge itself, missing paths for access to the bridge were constructed within the project in the cadastres of Mikulov, Sedlec, and Drasenhofen. These are currently being completed. As a result, a continuous road network connecting the mentioned cadastres will be created, which has so far been lacking in the area.
In addition to the aforementioned construction work, the important outputs of the project also include the newly built educational trail Portz Insel, the publication of a new brochure in three language versions (Czech, German, English), and the creation of a web subsection. These are important in terms of providing information about the historical significance of this location to the wider public. The newly repaired paths will therefore also enable connections to the Austrian cycling route No. 8, making this route suitable for cycling tourism. The new educational trail has a total of seven stops (six information panels and one resting place) and should be completed by early May.
The project was originally scheduled to end in June 2020. However, the final deadline will likely be slightly postponed due to the rescheduling of construction work and subsequent project activities.
