Kutná Hora - The historic center of Kutná Hora will receive a new pavement. The town has obtained a European grant for it. Work will begin this year and is expected to be completed by the end of April 2010. The evaluation committee has already selected the company that should undertake the contract, but it still needs to be confirmed by the city council, Mayor Ivo Šalátek told reporters today. Initially, six companies entered the competition, but four did not meet the requirements and were disqualified. The city then contacted the remaining two interested parties to submit their bids. Only one responded, committing to reconstruct the pavement within 14 months of the site handover, for 114 million crowns. The city received 82 million crowns from European Union grants for the project, the rest will be covered from its own resources. According to the mayor, the investment could be cheaper because the city has material that could be used for the pavement. Part of the cobblestones, for example, was leftover from earlier repairs and reconstructions, and the city has it in storage. Existing pavement or that which lies under the asphalt surface of some streets scheduled for repair could also be used. However, the mayor could not estimate how much material might be available. In the first two phases, for which the city has funds, roads will be repaired, among others, around St. James' Church, on Komenského, Ruthardova, Libušina, Vladislavova, Šultysova streets, and Václavské náměstí. In addition to surfaces, engineering networks will also be reconstructed, and the streets will receive new sidewalks, lighting, an information system, and furniture.
