Brno - During the scaffolding collapse on Saturday on Benešova street in the center of Brno, 20 cars were damaged, resulting in a loss of 2.7 million crowns. The cause of the accident, in which two people were injured, is not yet known. Investigators have established two possible scenarios for the sudden collapse of the three-story scaffolding: improper anchoring or non-compliance with proper construction procedures. A spokesperson for the Brno police told ČTK today.

"The investigation results should be known within a month. Investigators will rely on assessments from experts and structural engineers," she stated. She emphasized that the total damages have not yet been quantified. Losses from the damaged lighting and also the electrical wiring still need to be calculated by energy workers.
Two people were injured in the accident - a fifty-year-old man and his twenty-one-year-old daughter. At the time of the incident, they were withdrawing money from an ATM located on the building. The man sustained minor injuries, while his daughter suffered serious injuries. She has several fractures and a bruised abdomen. Today, she will be transferred from the intensive care unit of the trauma hospital to a regular ward. She could be discharged home within a week, said Petr Svoboda, the hospital's deputy director, to ČTK.
At the construction site, a so-called lightweight scaffolding was being used, said Ladislav Juříček, the first structural engineer to visit the site of the accident. It is not yet known whether it was properly anchored. "Anchoring is done to prevent the scaffolding from toppling. It can be secured directly to the wall. It depends, for example, on what type of anchors are used and the distance between the attachments," he stated, adding that he does not dare to assess the causes of the accident.
The 80-meter-long scaffolding collapsed on Saturday shortly after 10:00. It was standing next to a building whose facade is to be repaired. It collapsed along its entire length. In a section of 25 meters, it also tore down the cornice of the building and created a pile of debris up to one meter high. If the scaffolding had collapsed on a working day, the consequences of the accident would have been significantly worse. Benešova street is very busy.
