Prague - The best architectural project in the area of the Prague 6 district has become the gymnasium of Jan Kepler. The results of the competition were announced today at the awards ceremony by the mayor of Prague 6, Marie Kousalíková. The jury, composed of experts, selected from ten projects. Photographs of the evaluated buildings are on display as part of the Architecture Week Prague 2011 exhibition at the Písecká Gate in Prague.
The winning project had strong competition. Architects preferred it over the new building of the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University by the studio of "the first lady of Czech architecture" Alena Šrámková. It also triumphed over a wooden garden house in the Šárecké Valley and a low-energy building of the Velvarská Kindergarten.
The gymnasium was built next to the functionalist building of the gymnasium at Pohořelec in 2009. The floor plan of the concrete hall was designed by the architectural office Sporadical according to the dimensions of a school basketball court. The toilets, locker rooms, and other facilities are located in the old building. A terrace has been created on the green roof of the building, which is wheelchair accessible from the library on the third floor.
"We chose this building because it very appropriately complements the area. It is simple, modest, and fits into the surroundings," said jury member Luboš Pata at the announcement of the results. While the exterior walls are dominated by gray color, the architects chose light blue for the interior. A prominent feature is the glazed area on the eastern facade, where sunshades are placed.
The authors of the winning building received a commemorative plaque and a reward of 50,000 crowns from the mayor.
