Havlíčkův Brod

Reconstruction of the historical core area in Litomyšl, 1998
Havlíčkův Brod - The Havlíčkův Brod town hall is preparing a project for the revitalization of the historical center of the city. The modifications will affect Havlíčkovo náměstí and the surrounding streets. The costs are preliminarily estimated at 150 million crowns. Work could begin next year if European funds contribute to it, said the deputy mayor Libor Honzárek to reporters today.
"We are not able to do it solely with city funds. The square cannot be excavated for several years, as it is a relatively important transit point," Honzárek stated. Almost 9,000 cars pass through the center of the city daily. The Havlíčkovo náměstí needs not only an improvement in appearance. The technical infrastructure is also inadequate. The stormwater drainage is completely missing - water from the gutters flows along the pavement and freezes in winter.
A few years ago, the town hall commissioned the first studies to improve the appearance of the center. The project is being prepared by the Brno architectural office Burian-Křivinka, which has already proposed the reconstruction of the historical core area, for example in Litomyšl. The developed project will be assessed by the local councilors at the beginning of June, and on June 12, the public will also have the opportunity to provide input. The town hall will apply for a grant this autumn.
The center of Havlíčkův Brod is a protected zone. "The square has been very well preserved from previous centuries, the modifications should respect the historical context," noted Honzárek. The area should be leveled to one height level and paved with stone slabs. Approximately the same number of parking spaces as currently will remain. "We need to make sure that cars can park in the square," said the deputy mayor. In the long term, the square should not be passable, but access from both sides will be maintained.
According to Honzárek, the biggest discussions so far have concerned the small park, which has been in the upper corner of the square since the 1950s. Residents often wish for its preservation; however, experts plan a substantial reduction of greenery because it obstructs the view of historical buildings. According to them, low trees should only remain around the baroque Marian column and along the perimeter of the square.
