Brno - Brno is considering the construction of two new sports halls in the Vodova area, where two halls already exist. One of the planned buildings would serve for ball sports training and the other for curling. This was announced to journalists today by Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL). According to him, the new halls would be of a simpler type and would cost tens of millions.
The Municipal Hall Vodova has been used by the Sports Club Královo Pole since 2000. The lease agreement will expire in March 2020. Then the operation will be taken over by the city company Starez-sport, Hladík noted. The Brno city council approved the contract today, which tasked the company to develop a site development study.
Currently, there is a smaller hall with 900 seats and a larger hall with 3000 seats. "It is the largest for ball sports in the country. We want to keep this hall for matches, but then we are unable to have sufficient capacity for training," Hladík stated.
According to him, this should be resolved by the new training hall, where people would train for ball sports such as volleyball, handball, basketball, floorball, and similar sports. "Halls sized 40 by 20 meters are generally lacking in Brno. Floorball, in particular, has seen a sharp increase in popularity in recent years. Thus, clubs in Brno must train even in halls that do not meet the required dimensions," Hladík added.
The two existing halls can be used for various international matches or large sporting events, but the unions' ideas, according to the city, clash with the occupancy of both facilities which are used by SK Královo Pole for training. Many events therefore cannot be held in Brno.
The construction of a new building would thus solve the lacking training areas, and the current spaces could serve for sports events. The second planned facility would then serve for curling. Brno already owns two lanes that it purchased for the Olympic festival. "If we build a hall and buy two more lanes, we will have a fully functional hall with four lanes for hosting international tournaments," Hladík added.
