Brno - Brno has created a book on how public spaces, such as streets and parks, should look. This was stated in a press release by the spokesperson of the city hall, Filip Poňuchálek. The principles for creating public spaces were developed by the Office of the Architect of the City of Brno. Cities, architects, planners, and the public can draw from this book. It is available for viewing on the office's website.
The book "Principles of Creating Public Spaces" was written by a team consisting of ten authors and more than twenty collaborators. "The book can serve as a guide for implementing changes to public spaces. It can be used by representatives of the city, city districts, architects, planners, and the public. I appreciate that it contrasts both poor and good examples from practice," said Deputy Mayor Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL).
The publication describes methods for creating streets, squares, or parks so that people feel comfortable and safe there. "Most of the examples found in the document are from Brno. However, the authors were also inspired by neighboring European cities. I will be glad if it finds its readers primarily among the professional public and if we succeed in applying the recommendations given by the author team in the upcoming construction projects," said councilor for urban planning Filip Chvátal (KDU-ČSL). According to him, interested parties will find chapters in the publication that deal with the arrangement of streets and squares, greenery and tree protection, rainwater management, transportation infrastructure and technical networks, or types of street furniture.
The principles from the book are also applied by the office when designing modifications to existing public spaces, such as Mendlovo náměstí or when planning the new district Trnitá, for which an update of the territorial study is being prepared.
