Brno - The Brno House of Art, which is visited by nearly 90,000 people annually, is expecting a major renovation this year. The building on Malinovského Square in the city center is in poor technical condition, and builders will therefore reconstruct the building's facade and social facilities. The house is also expected to open more to its surroundings. In the basement, which currently serves as a storage area, a wine bar open to the garden will be created, said Deputy Mayor Barbora Javorová to ČTK today.

According to the politician, the exhibition building should thus become more open and alive, similar to the Bohéma restaurant in the nearby Janáček Theatre.
The renovation of the building was initially expected to cost nearly 25 million crowns. However, the city council had the study calculating the amount of costs updated and today approved a new version estimating 44 million crowns.
The building of the House of Art is in poor technical condition. The problem with the exhibition halls on the first floor is their glass ceilings. On hot days, they regularly turn into a sauna, putting the displayed exhibits at risk. Conversely, in winter, it is not possible to properly heat the halls.
The poor thermal insulation of the building, moisture in the basement, damaged facade, and peeling plaster are also concerns. Visual artist Vladimír Kokolia is also aware of this. In 2004, during the transition from frost to warming at the end of winter, a piece of falling plaster caused a cut on his head.
The exact date of the renovations is not yet known. According to Javorová, the city will announce a tender for the construction contractor most likely this summer, and the renovations will take several months. The institution's exhibition calendar currently ends on July 29. In August, the House of Art regularly has a holiday.
It is still unknown when the first exhibition installed in the renovated building will be open to the public. The last vernissage is planned for June 26, curator Jana Vránová told ČTK today.
