Brno - The Brno Bishopric has repaired and made accessible to the public the historic gardens beneath Petrov. People can now access them through a newly established passage from the cathedral, or from Petrská Street. A space has been created for relaxation, meetings, and cultural events. The total costs amounted to 14.6 million crowns, said the spokesperson for the Brno bishopric, Martina Jandlová.
On the southwestern slopes of Petrov, where the Brno Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul stands, the Denis Gardens are freely accessible. East of the cathedral, interested parties can explore the recently reconstructed Capuchin Gardens. The now-open garden lies north of the temple, towards the Václav Havel alley and the Zelný trh (Vegetable Market). It is a historic part of the Petrov complex, a national cultural monument, which, apart from the cathedral, also includes the surrounding buildings.
In the gardens beneath Petrov, arborists and builders worked, planting new plants and trees, repairing historical walls, restoring the statues of Saint Barbara and John of Nepomuk, and renewing the passage portal between the cathedral and the gardens, behind which a spiral staircase was built.
Inside the former agricultural background, space has been created for an exhibition. Stone fragments, models, and text panels represent the three most commonly represented artistic styles of sacred buildings - Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque.
Exhibitions will also take place outside, with a plan for regular changes. In the next five years, the outdoor exhibition will showcase 24 architecturally interesting churches of the Brno diocese from the 12th to the 18th century.
The gardens will also serve for suburban camps, school educational programs, or events with a spiritual dimension. Occasional concerts and lectures are also planned.
