Brno – Several architectural studies are exploring how the former Mosilana textile factory site in Brno should be transformed. The owner and investor, Financial Consortium, wanted to demolish it and build a residential complex; however, some preservationists and the city opposed this, and the Ministry of Culture initiated administrative proceedings to declare the site a cultural monument. Therefore, architects are now proposing an urban development solution and concept that aims to breathe new life into the area while preserving the uniqueness of this place for future generations, stated Jiří Filip in a press release on behalf of the investor. In August, the investor plans to announce one or two winning designs, and in November, they will evaluate the winning proposal and prepare its presentation.

The Mosilana site today is a four-hectare brownfield visible from the historic city center, with nearly 50 buildings. It is located between Křenová, Vlhká, and Špitálka, with a railway embankment bordering it to the north. For many years, various firms operated in the former factory buildings. Instead of the old industrial structures, the investor planned to build a new residential complex. However, the city's action to halt the change of the zoning plan for this area and request the site's registration as a monument has paused those plans.

According to City Councilor for Urban Planning Filip Chvátal, the city's aim for the redevelopment of the site is to include housing but also greenery, which will include the flowing Svitava conduit. This is also why the investor is communicating with the city, and a workshop involving architects, city representatives, investors, and preservationists took place last week.

Not only Mosilana but also the surrounding area bordered by Křenová, Cejl, Vlhká, and the flow of the Svitava River is a large industrial area, much of which no longer serves its original purpose. For example, the city plans a "smart quarter of the future" in Špitálka. However, due to the fact that in June, the councilors did not approve a four-year-prepared zoning plan proposal, transformations of some brownfields are being postponed indefinitely into the future.
