Prague - A memorial to the victims of slavery is to be built in the Senegalese capital Dakar within two years, following the design and under the supervision of the Czech architectural studio Helika. The construction has been personally supported and approved by Senegalese President Macky Sall, as reported by the weekly Ekonom and the iHNed.cz portal today.
The Senegalese government has been trying to find a suitable design for the memorial for several years. According to the weekly, the budget for the construction is estimated to be between 12 and 13 million euros (302 to 327 million crowns).
"It is an interesting project for us and a great reference. It's not something that will make us incredibly wealthy. But it is something that, we believe, will be written about in global architectural publications," said Pavel Pol, the executive director of Helika, to the weekly.
According to Ekonom, the structure named Mémorial de Gorée symbolizes a ship, and the name references the island near Dakar where slaves were gathered before their journey to America.
Architects from Helika have previously designed a hospital and an administrative center in Gabon's capital, Libreville, the weekly added.
