LONDON - A two-ton bronze statue by the famous British sculptor Henry Moore was stolen from the courtyard of his foundation in Hertfordshire, north of London, on Thursday evening. This was reported today by the British police. The value of the work depicting a reclining figure is estimated at up to 5.3 million dollars (about 127 million crowns).

A trio of thieves lifted the 3.5-meter-long statue from the Henry Moore Foundation's estate in Hertfordshire at 10:15 PM local time using a crane and loaded it onto a truck.
"It is a very valuable statue, and we are closely working with the Henry Moore Foundation to ensure its safe return," said Detective Graeme Smith. According to him, the foundation has offered "a substantial reward for information leading to the recovery of the work."
Smith also expressed concerns that the thieves could destroy the work and sell it for scrap. "It could be anything from an organized theft for an art collector to a theft for the mere scrap value of the bronze...," noted the detective. "It would be very hard to sell the work as it is... and that is what the people from the foundation are worried about," he added.
Henry Moore, who passed away in 1986 at the age of 88, is one of the most famous modern sculptors in the world. He is particularly known for his large abstract works in bronze and stone. The mentioned sculpture was created between 1969 and 1970.
