Vienna - The State Theatre in the Upper Austrian capital Linz is opening a new opera house today, which, according to the portal oberoesterreich.at, is the most modern in Europe. The musical theatre, which will host operas, musicals, and other performances, aims to attract audiences with 1,130 seats not only from Austria but also from neighboring Bavaria in Germany and the Czech Republic.
To celebrate the opening, the theatre has prepared ten premieres. According to the APA agency, the highlight will be the opera Spuren der Verirrten (Footprints of the Lost) by American composer Philip Glass, based on the namesake work by Austrian writer Peter Handke. The musical theatre will also premiere the musical The Witches of Eastwick in Austria for the first time.
The construction of the new building, costing 180 million euros, was challenging, and the theatre continues to face criticism regarding its finances.
In 1984, an association was formed that considered the construction as its goal. The government agreed on the construction of the cultural venue eight years later, but 60 percent of the population rejected the initiated construction on the banks of the Danube. Construction only resumed at a different location in April 2009. DPA recalled that the same site was where Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler wanted to build an opera, as he envisioned turning Linz into a cultural metropolis.
