Architecture Gallery Brno, March 12 - April 23, 2010
Opening on March 11, 2010, at 7 PM
The exhibition, prepared by the Austrian association - the platform for architecture wonderland, seeks to describe and capture the sense, purpose, and function of architectural competitions in architectural practice in Europe. The exhibition organizers approached European architectural offices in 25 countries and obtained 116 stories about the course of competitions that led to the projects presented at the exhibition. Architects from Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal, and Spain are most represented in the exhibition. The Czech architectural scene is represented by the association Skupina and architect Jan Magasanik.

The exhibition examines and attempts to evaluate the role of architectural competitions in contemporary European culture through dozens of projects, how they influence the work and thinking of architects, and what impact they have on the innovativeness and complexity of winning proposals. A competition can be an opportunity for a successful career start as well as a valuable source of professional experience, but it can also be an absolute failure.

Participation in competitions represents a test of the creator's own abilities regardless of predetermined conditions, personal contacts, nationality, the size of the office, and gender. The opportunity for experimentation and the development of a personal vision is much more direct than in the usual relationship between architect and client. Winning a competition means much more than just obtaining a contract. It can signify the possibility of immediate advancement, a change in the scale of previous projects, entry into the international context, specialization. And publicity, recognition in the profession as well as beyond it, acknowledgment from colleagues and the general public also play a significant role. On the other hand, competing represents a significant investment of time, energy, and money, with an uncertain outcome. Is the recognition worth this effort?
