A total of 85 students from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Brno prepared their bachelor's thesis on the topic "Extension of the House of Art in Ostrava". The subject of the bachelor's thesis was the urban and architectural design of the extension of the House of Art in Ostrava, which currently serves the Gallery of Fine Arts in Ostrava. Along with the design of the extension building itself, parking and landscaping of the surrounding area had to be addressed within the defined territory. The goal of the design was to build a modern European gallery for the 21st century that would correspond to the character and significance of the art collections, which place GVUO among the most important on a national level and among unique institutions at the regional level. The core of the gallery was to remain the permanent exhibitions of the most significant collections that shape the identity of GVUO. The design of the extension was also supposed to create a background for educational and professional activities with the collection material, facilities for visitors to obtain additional information, and last but not least, to remove all barriers that prevent access for disabled and elderly citizens. A mandatory building program was established, including floor area, which could be expanded and supplemented to ensure all operational and functional links. The concept of functional organization had to take into account the requirements of the various functions of the building (especially exhibition spaces – lighting with regard to showcasing exhibits, barrier-free access for visitors, depots – conditions for storing exhibits). The concept of operational organization also had to ensure optimal interconnections between individual functions, i.e., publicly accessible operations and the gallery's facilities, visitor movement, transport of exhibits, etc.
